Light Cycle
From Stephen Macdonald's website http://vaxmuf.t35.com/history.htm:
Early 1989, Tron and Halcyion then teamed up and produced VAXMULC; a Multi-User Light-Cycle game for two players in the style of the light cycle sequence from the "Tron" movie. This used VMS mailboxing routines in a peer-to-peer fashion to link up two players in real-time so they could race against each other, trying to force each other's light cycle bike to crash into a wall or the trail of either bike. This game provided an insight into how well synchronised each game player's screen would be when communicating via mailboxes.
I contacted Stephen last year via his website and he kindly provided me with the source code to two of his original games, VAXMULC and DODGEMS. Having not seen the light of day for a good many years, VAXMULC is now running again on a modern version of OpenVMS (having originally been coded on a VAX 11/780) and will be the focus of a ladder-style competition of skill, dexterity and quick thinking.
The game will be played via two terminals running at 9,600 baud. Each round will consist of a 'first to four wins' deathmatch. The winner will be collectively revered by their peers, and win a coveted NMOC branded goodie.
To your light cycle...
