I was reading an article on newsgroup comp.sys.dec which reminded me of how to decode DEC serial numbers. I knew the first two digits was the manufacturing location, in this case 'AY' is short for Ayrshire (Scotland), but was reminded that the first digit of the number is the last digit of the year of manufacture, so in this case it would be 1992, the second digit the month of manufacture, January, and the third digit the production run, in this case '4'. How about that! Assuming one production run a day (come on, give me a bit of slack!) then that would make this VAXstation 19 years old today!
Happy birthday VAXstation! We salute your supreme engineering, and wish you another 19 years of processing (which reminds me, must get those fans looked at!)
