DIGITAL/DEC/Comaq/HP VAX Machines

Useful Information:

Digital UNIX/tru64 4.0G Binaries

Here are a selection of tarballs of some popular programs and libraries precompile for tru64 4.0G. They may well work other versions, but I don't have the facilities to try this. Also note that many of the packages will probably work in other locations than /usr/local, but this is where they were built to. You will need to update your PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH and MANPATH environment variables where applicable.

nethack-3.4.3-tru64-4.0G-binary.tar.gz - THE classic single-player text adventure. Unpack this into /usr/local. Main executable is /usr/local/games/nethack. See http://www.nethack.org for source distributions and other binaries.

gcc-3.4.6-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - GNU C and C++ Compiler and associated libraries. Unpack into /usr/local and add /usr/local/bin to your path. Include make, bison and other tools.

vim71-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - VIM Version 7.1. Unpack into /usr/local.

bash-3.2-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - GNU Bourne Again Shell (BASH) Version 3.2. Unpack into /usr/local.

coreutils-6.9-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - GNU Core Utilities (ls,df,etc.) Version 6.9. Unpack into /usr/local.

zlib-1.2.3-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - ZLIB Version 1.2.3. Unpack into /usr/local.

perl-5.8.8-bin-tru64-4.0G.tar.gz - Perl Version 5.8.8. Unpack into /usr/local.

VAX OpenVMS 7.3-2 Binaries

Here is a selection of binaries for OpenVMS 7.3-2 (the latest version) for DIGITAL VAX based machines. The binaries were compiled on the VAX 4000/90. The binaries are distributed in OpenVMS Saveset archives. You will need to download and run the reset_backup_saveset_file_attributes.com script before unpacking the savesets.

nethack-3.4.3-OpenVMS-7.3.2-binary.sav - A VAX version of the classic single-player text adventure. Unpack this archive to a suitable directory and define the logical NETHACKDIR to point to it. You can then define a symbol within your login file, such as 'NETHACK == "$NETHACKDIR:NETHACK.EXE"'. See http://www.nethack.org for source distributions and other binaries.

VAX APL 4.0

I have an interest in APL and an interest in VAXen, so VAX APL was always going to be interesting. I'm still exploring, and would be grateful for contact with anyone who used to use it, has manuals (please!), or has an interest. The following help files are supplied with VAX APL:

APL.HLP
(text file)
VAXAPL.HLP (text file)
VAXAPL.PDF (a PDF version of the above)

If you are interested, here is a list of the DECgear I'm currently running:
